THE GRAND BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN

A BRIEF HISTORY FROM FRANCE VIA HOLLAND TO THE UK.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen is almost a smaller version of his bigger brother the Grand Griffon Vendeen. It was count Christian d'Elva from the "de Ricoudet" kennel who seriously bred these "basset" types and selected them for their hunting qualities as well as their looks. He wanted a hound with stamina, a good rough coat and straight front legs.

In 1907 monsieur Paul Dezamy founded the French "Club du Griffon Vendeen". He was looking for a "hare hound" quick enough for the Vendee landscape where hunting on horseback was almost impossible.

With the death of monsieur Dezamy in 1933, Abel Dezamy now wanted the two breeds to be distinctive. According to him the Petit Basset was not simply a smaller hound but "should be harmoniously reduced in all proportions while retaining all the hunting qualities of his larger relative the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen." The general opinion was and still is that the Grand Basset is ideally suited for hunting hare and the Petit is better suited to hunting rabbit, being shorter in leg he is able to get through thickest undergrowth whilst the GBGV has the speed for the chase in open country as well.

The Grand Basset can be divided into two types. The "Dezamy" type with longer legs, more bone and the noble sculptured head and the "type classique" shorter in leg and not as heavy in bone which to a non- specialist could appear to be a large Petit. There are however some very subtle differences.

The GBGV should give the appearance of a large hound on shortened legs. Noble in head with a long strong muzzle and good well curled long ears reaching beyond the end of the nose which should be large with big nostrils. A body of good length and a strong high set tapering stern to be carried like the blade of a sabre and to reach below the hock. His smaller cousin the "Petit" should give the appearance of a small compact hound with short muzzle, ears not reaching beyond the nose and tail to the hock.

The dominant kennel of the classique type is the "Hamel de la Renaudie" kennel of monsieur Renaud Buche the president of the club and now the president of the French kennel club. His many champions include "Lucky Luke du Hamel de la Renaudie," "Nemo du Hamel de la Renaudie" and his son "Santal du Hamel de la Renaudie". Other champions include "Vidocq" "Candie" and "Grognon".

In 1994 "Debucher" imported "Jolanda du Hamel de la Renaudie" as a puppy who came through quarantine. Her sire "Grognon” was a “Bacchus” and "Candie" son and her dam "Abelle des Erondes de Peussefier" was a "Santal" daughter. "Jolanda" proved to be a very significant influence on the breed in the UK. She had 4 litters and then retired to the Devonshire countryside.

Even today a litter of GBGV can be very varied in height. The reason for this is that after the 2nd world war the Grand Griffon and Briquet had almost died out and the breeders used the oversized grand bassets up until 1976 when it was forbidden to cross breed any of the 4 sizes. The French standard insists that the GBGV must have the "Basset" appearance and not resemble a "Briquet" type.

Until recently the top dogs bred from outside France came mainly from the "Roc de Deymier" lines using the expertise of monsieur Yves Audouy. In the 80’s the top winning dogs in and outside France were:

"French Dutch Lux Ch. Loustic du Roc de Deymier" "Dutch Ch. Roquepine du Roc de Deymier" and her sire "French Ch. Lamour du Roc de Deymier."

As well as those previously mentioned GBGV's, who were top winners in France in the early 80’s were "Vigo des Erondes de Peussifier". "Seigneur du Roc de Deymier", "Vizir de la Guimandiere" who was used in "du Val d'Orbieu" breeding ( he was a very good hunting hound of "Dezamy" type). Also "Miko" and "Rudhy du Val d'Orbieu" and "Osiris du Barbillot des Maladieres".

I am pleased to say by 2002 most of these lines had been imported into the UK.

Jolanda Huisman of the famous "Greffier du Roi " kennel, bred "Dutch/Danish/ German champion Dampierre du Greffier du Roi" he was also 3 times world champion. He was by "Santal du Hamel de la Renaudie" ex "Roquepine du Roc de Deymier". This male became in turn the sire of the first two litters born in the UK in quarantine.

In 1987 Nick Frost "Dehra" bought a bitch from Jolanda Huisman "I’m Dutch du Greffier du Roi" (Hennessey Cognac du Greffier du Roi - Et Caetera du Greffier du Roi). She was sent to Denmark to live for a short time with Per Knudsen a famous PBGV breeder of the "Morebess" kennel. He mated her to "Ch. Dampierre du Greffier du Roi" and the first litter out of "Dutchy" born early 1989 in quarantine was a litter of 4. Sadly the best male "Dehra ambassador" died at 15 months of a twisted gut. A sister was also lost very young. The other bitch "Dehra Allo Allo" was campaigned in the early 90’s by Lynne Owens of the "Jaclin" kennel. "Grace" had 3 litters and died at 15 years of age.

"Dutchy" returned to Holland after her litter and in a second litter produced "Mise en Scene du Greffier du Roi" sired by " Amour du Roc de Deymier" who later went to Sweden. Their son "Qu-Pid du Greffier du Roi" came through quarantine as a youngster in 1993. He proved a useful stud and was the sire of Dehra Allo Allo's first litter. He was mated to "Efficace du Roc de Deymier" 3 times producing the Dehra "D" and "F" litters he also sired a litter to Dehra Charlotte at Melanter an Efficace daughter.

After Nick Frost moved to the USA the Debucher "G" litter was born (Qu-Pid - Efficace). From this litter "Debucher Gaston" was sold to the Bassbarr kennel and sired many litters.

Jolanda Huisman had bred a highly successful litter from "Dampierre" to " Halou Baba du Greffier du Roi". This litter included "Jaromir du Greffier du Roi" who was campaigned in Germany and throughout Europe by Heidi Winkelmann. Becoming a multi champion,  he was one of the top winning hounds of his era. His litter sister "Jour'd'Ete du Greffier du Roi" was one of the most heart stopping bitches I ever saw and won the Paris show at the age of ten years!! Sadly she never produced a litter for her owners the Huikeshoven family.

On 30th November 1990 a second litter was born in quarantine. This was a repeat mating. The dam "Halou Baba" had been kindly loaned to us by Jolanda Huisman and bred to "Dampierre". The pups were brought through quarantine by Diane and Colin Poole "Peterstown" in conjunction with niCk Frost.

From the second litter the pick a bitch, "Bien- Venue at Dehra" was raised at Clipperdown Cottage. She later produced one litter to "Flambeur" before going to the USA with Nick Frost in 1995. This was the Dehra "E" litter.

After two litters were born in quarantine with the help of Jolanda Huisman, Nick Frost and I were able to purchase "Efficace du Roc de Deymier" a 2 year old bitch in 1991. She in turn was mated to "Eros des Erondes de Peussefier" and came through quarantine in whelp. Tragically the litter of 6 puppies died at about two weeks old but my decision to bring "Effie" through quarantine was ultimately a wise one as she produced 5 litters in the UK. Her last litter to "Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi" included Dutch champion "Debucher le Barbu" of which more later.

In 1992 "Efficace" was mated to the litter brother of "Bien- Venue", "Billy Joe Peterstown" and produced the Dehra "C" litter. From this litter "Dehra Charlotte at Melanter" was sold to Stella Blackmore and proved a very useful brood bitch for Scotland. One of her sons " Melanter Fetlar from Stepends" belonging to Vy Mochan was the first Grand Basset to win BOB at Crufts in 1999. His sire Dehra Esperance de Debucher came from the very successful Dehra "E” litter.

Another bitch from the "C" litter, Dehra Cherie belonging to Val Jackson and Peter Marks "Duntech" also produced several litters, many of which have had a successful show career.  A male, "Dehra Chanaan" was lightly shown by owner Pam Aldous and was used at stud and his progeny have also been very relevant to the breeding programme in the UK. One of his daughter's out of "Dehra Allo Allo's" second litter was "Jaclin Bewitched at Deannound" belonging to Yvonne Dean. She was best bitch at Crufts 1999.

In 1993 Yves Audouy offered me a young 18 month old male who had just won the reserve CAC at the French elevage. You could not pass this wonderful hound by and after a short discussion fortunately Jolanda Huisman agreed to buy him with me and take him to Holland where he could be used at stud and also become a Dutch champion. His 2 litter sisters both in the Netherlands also produced excellent progeny of good type winning consistently all over Europe. This dog was "Flambeur du Roc de Deymier." he was top stud in Holland, Sweden, and the UK and is possibly the most influential Grand Basset in the history of the breed in the UK. He died at 12 years of age. His sons and daughters are producing excellent type to this day.

In January 1994 " Flambeur" came out of quarantine along with 2 PBGV's purchased in France the previous year. I was so lucky to have him as Yves Audouy died in 1992 soon after Jolanda and I bought him. The "Roc de Deymier" kennel was dispersed amongst a few breeders in France. Sadly the expertise of his lines died with their breeder. Jolanda Huisman and I gleaned some of his wonderful knowledge and happily the "Flambeur" litters and those of his sisters "Farandole" and "Favorite" in Holland have helped to maintain the type both here and in the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

Through 1994 Flambeur was campaigned and was top imported register all breeds in 1994 and top hound imported register in 1995.

His first litter in 1994 co-bred by myself and Nick Frost to "Bien- venue at Dehra" produced some wonderful puppies. " Dehra Esperance de Debucher" "Bear" still lives as main house dog here at Clipperdown Cottage and has produced many very good offspring in his own right. "Melanter Fetlar for Stepends" was from one of his early litters to "Dehra charlotte at Melanter."

Grands Bassets finally came off the imported register in 1996 "Bear " was the first GBGV to go Best in Show in the UK in January 1997 and subsequently first GBGV BOB at an all breed championship show that year. He was top GBGV 1996 and 1997 jointly with his litter sister "Dehra Esprit d'Amour" owned by Jessica Holm of the Holmchappell kennel. Amongst the championship shows that gave us breed classes Jolanda Huisman was invited to judge "Houndshow" that year . She gave best of breed to "Dehra Allo Allo" and best male to "Flambeur." Best puppy was "Melanter Fetlar" ( a Flambeur/Efficace grandson) who went best puppy in show. Now with these classes finally the GBGV’s could qualify for Crufts!!!

Another brother from the Dehra "E" litter "Int. Champion Dehra Extra Ordinaire" owned by Jolanda made his debut at 9 months at the national elevage in France in June 1995 and took best of breed much to the utter joy of myself and Jolanda. The judges were Renaud Buche and Daniel Didier. He also won the dog CAC at the French elevage in 1996 he is an international champion having achieved his hunting title in France. He is also the sire of some of the best dogs from the Greffier du Roi kennel.

"Dehra Embrasser" a litter sister produced 4 litters. Her first to "Debucher Gaston" produced "Debucher Ivoire" a lovely lemon and white bitch who was top GBGV puppy in 1997. "Fleur" was also mated to "Bien fait du Greffier du Roi", "Debucher Jaromir" and "Stepends Metier."

A brother "Dehra Ebats" belonging to Sue and Mick Virgo sired many litters including a litter to "Dehra Cherie". A daughter from this litter "Duntech Bavard" was best bitch at Crufts in 2000.

Dehra Esprit d'Amour "Anu" the first GBGV for Jessica Holm the BBC Crufts presenter made several appearances on the TV programme not least as a "tracking hound" with the Otterhounds in the new forest and also did an agility course at Crufts in the big ring! She also won best any variety not separately classified hound at Crufts in 1998 the first year the breed made its appearance at this show. She proved a good brood bitch and her daughter by "Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi," " Holmchappell Hellion" has been a very successful competitor in the show ring and produced a litter to the new import at Debucher, "Nireau du Barbillot des Maladieres".

In 1995 "Jolanda du Hamel de la Renaudie" came through quarantine from monsieur Buche and produced four litters. One to "Flambeur" another to "Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi" and 2 to "Bear". From the "Flambeur" litter a brother and sister "Debucher Jaromir" and " Debucher Jour d'Hiver" have between them produced exciting progeny.

Peter Marks brought through a puppy bitch who quarantined with "Jolanda" this was "Joie de Vivre des Clos de Montepazat" but she never produced puppies.

In 1996 I brought into the UK under the balai directive a young male from the Greffier du Roi kennel. "Bien fait du Greffier du Roi" ("Rendez Vous du Greffier du Roi" ex "Pourquoi pas du Greffier du Roi") "Pourquoi" a truly beautiful bitch was also a "Dutchy" daughter bred to "Eros des Erondes de Peussefier". This male "Ben" proved yet another very significant stud for the breed in the UK. His first litter to "Efficace" produced "Dutch champion Debucher le Barbu" who was top GBGV 1998. 2000. 2001 2002 2003 2004 (and top hound in the UK 2001 "Barbu" was also no. 7 all breeds in the UK in 2001 unprecedented for a rare breed.

Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi and Dehra Esperance de Debucher
two of the dominant studs in the UK and also both top winning show dogs in their day

"BEN'S" SIRE "RENDEZVOUS" IS BY "EUMEL DES ANDOUILLIERS DE BOURGOGNE" WHO GOES BACK TO MANY OLD FRENCH LINES. "BEN" SIRED AND HAS PRODUCED GOOD TYPE TO "DEHRA ESPRIT D'AMOUR". "JACLIN ABRACADABRA" (A "DEHRA ALLO ALLO" DAUGHTER BY "DEHRA CHANAAN AT SWEETDEAN") ANOTHER LITTER TO "DEHRA CHARLOTTE AT MELANTER" AND IN 2001 TO 2 LITTER SISTERS BY "DEBUCHER JAROMIR," "DEBUCHER QUANT-A-SOI" AND "DEBUCHER QUALITY". THESE PUPS MADE THEIR SUCCESSFUL DEBUT IN THE RING IN 2002.

BILL O'LOUGHLIN OF THE BASSET KENNEL "BASSBARR" BROUGHT A BROTHER AND SISTER THROUGH FROM THE GREFFIER DU ROI KENNEL IN 1996 BY "DEHRA EXTRA ORDINAIRE" OUT OF "INT. CHAMPION OH LA LA DU GREFFIER DU ROI." THIS BITCH WAS BY " AMOUR DU ROC DE DEYMIER" EX " ET CAETERA DU GREFFIER DU ROI" HER SON THE MALE "ENTRE NOUS DU GREFFIER DU ROI" SIRED ABOUT 3 LITTERS IN THE UK . HIS LITTER SISTER "EN AVANT DU GREFFIER DU ROI " PRODUCED SEVERAL LITTERS, A COUPLE TO "DEBUCHER GASTON" A BITCH FROM THIS UNION, "BASSBARR ARIA" PURCHASED BY VY MOCHAN PRODUCED TWO GOOD LITTERS TO "MELANTER FETLAR FROM STEPENDS".

IN 1997 A BITCH " ISA DES RAYS DU LARPS" WAS IMPORTED FROM DANIEL DIDIER'S KENNEL IN WHELP TO "LAMOUR DES RAYES DU LARPS" SHE CAME OUT OF QUARANTINE TO THE MY KENNEL. SHE HAD REARED 4 PUPPIES ONE OF WHOM "DEBUCHER MISE-EN-SCENE " WENT UP TO SCOTLAND TO VY MOCHAN AND PRODUCED A LITTER TO "FETLAR".

AT THE SAME TIME BILL O'LOUCHLIN IMPORTED A BITCH ALSO IN WHELP. "UTOPIE DU GREFFIER DU ROI" (FLAMBEUR - MISE-EN SCENE DU GREFFIER DU ROI) WHO HAD BEEN MATED IN FRANCE TO "FICO DES GREZES DU LYS" AND PRODUCED 5 BITCHES IN QUARANTINE. THESE WERE NAMED AFTER THE "SPICE GIRLS"!!! THE BEST BITCH "BASSBARR SPORTY SPICE" WAS LATER PURCHASED BY JESSICA HOLM AND BECAME TOP GBGV IN 1999.

IN AUTUMN 1997 AGAIN VIA THE BALAI DIRECTIVE " GRANDE BRETAGNE DU GREFFIER DU ROI" JOINED THE DEBUCHER GBGVS. "BRITTA" WAS BY "ELTON DE L'ECHO DE LA SURCHARDE" OUT OF "FAVORITE" FLAMBEUR'S LITTER SISTER. SHE PRODUCED ONE LITTER IN THE UK BY "DEBUCHER JAROMIR" THIS UNION PRODUCED THE SISTERS "DEBUCHER QUANT-A-SOI" AND "DEBUCHER QUALITY"

IN LATE 1998 JESSICA HOLM BROUGHT THROUGH ANOTHER BITCH "KALIPHA DU GREFFIER DU ROI" HER SIRE "ECU DE L'ECHO DE LA SUCHARDE" WAS THE LITTER BROTHER TO "BRITTA'S" FATHER. HE SHOULD HAVE IN FACT BEEN HER SIRE, BUT HAD REFUSED TO MATE "FAVORITE" WHEN JOLANDA HUISMAN ARRIVED ALL THE WAY DOWN IN FRANCE!!! SO HIS LITTER BROTHER WAS USED. IN FACT "BRITTA'S" SISTER "GROS BISES DU GREFFIER DU ROI" "BISOU" WAS TOP GBGV IN HOLLAND IN 1998.

SINCE 1999 WHEN WE HAD OUR FIRST BREED CLASSES AT CRUFTS THE GBGVS HAVE BECOME QUITE SUCCESSFUL IN THE SHOW RING, GIVING THEIR SMALLER COUSINS THE PETITS A RUN FOR THEIR MONEY! THE FIRST GRAND BASSET TO GAIN A GROUP PLACING WAS LYNNE OWENS' JACLIN JAMES BOND (FLAMBEUR - DEHRA ALLO ALLO) AT BATH IN 1999. "ROGER" WAS TOP MALE GBGV THAT YEAR.

IN 2000 OUR JUDGE AT CRUFTS WAS JEFF BUNNEY WHO AWARDED BOB TO "BARBU". TO CELEBRATE THE MILLENNIUM IN OCTOBER OF THAT YEAR THE BGV CLUB HELD ITS TWO DAY SHOW AND CONGRESS WITH MANY MEMBERS COMING FROM OVERSEAS TO WATCH AND TAKE PART AS SPEAKERS ON THE SECOND DAY. UNDER INTERNATIONAL JUDGE JOHN HIDDES "BASSBARR SPORTY SPICE FOR HOLMCHAPPELL" WAS BEST OF BREED. "SORTIE" WAS TOP GBGV BITCH FOR 2000. AT THE SHOW THE BEST DOG WAS "TASWAY WOLFTONE CHEZ DEBUCHER" (BIEN FAIT DU GREFFIER DU ROI - JACLIN ABRACADABRA) BRED BY CHRISTINE AND PETERNEL LEVERETT.

BEST PUPPY WAS "STEPENDS FORTEVIOT CHEZ DEBUCHER "HANDLED ON THE DAY BY HER BREEDER VY MOCHAN. "FLORA" IS BY "FETLAR" OUT OF "BASSBARR ARIA" (DEBUCHER GASTON - EN AVANT DU GREFFIER DU ROI) . SHE IN TURN WAS TOP BITCH IN THE BREED IN 2001.

AFTER THE SHOW, THANKS TO THE PET PASSPORT SCHEME "DEBUCHER LE BARBU" WENT OVER TO THE NETHERLANDS WITH JOLANDA HUISMAN AND BECAME A DUTCH CHAMPION, BUT HIS REAL TRIUMPH WAS TO GO BEST IN SHOW AT THE "WINNERS" SHOW 2000 IN AMSTERDAM THAT YEAR.

AFTER THE RAVAGES OF THE FOOT AND MOUTH CRISIS IN THE UK AND SUBSEQUENTLY IN HOLLAND, CRUFTS 2001 WAS HELD IN MAY. THE JUDGE YVONNE DEAN AWARDED BOB FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING TO "BARBU" AND BEST BITCH WAS JESSICA HOLM'S "HOLMCHAPPELL GOING DUTCH" SHE IS BY "DEBUCHER JAROMIR" OUT OF "KALIPHA DU GREFFIER DU ROI"

ALSO IN 2001 "BARBU" BECAME THE FIRST GBGV TO WIN A HOUND GROUP IN THE UK AT BLACKPOOL AN ALL BREEDS CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW UNDER JUDGE TERRY THORN. HE WON 2 MORE HOUND GROUPS IN THE UK AT WINDSOR AND EAST OF ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS.

IN 2002 I HAD THE HONOUR OF JUDGING THE BREED AT CRUFTS AND FOR THE FIRST TIME AN OVERSEAS GBGV WENT BEST OF BREED. MULTI CHAMPION "JUGEOTE DU GREFFIER DU ROI (HOFFENHILLS DOMINO GREFFIER DU ROI - HOFFENHILL'S MERCI GREFFIER) "DOMINO" BY FLAMBEUR OUT OF DUTCHY HAD BEEN TOP HOUND IN EUROPE AND JUGEOTE'S DAM MERCI 'S GRANDMOTHER WAS "ELEGANTE DU ROC DE DEYMIER" ONE OF THE FIRST GBGVS I SAW IN FRANCE WITH JOLANDA AND THE REASON FOR MY IMMEDIATE LOVE FOR THE BREED.

THE GBGV IS NOT AN EASY DOG TO BREED. LITTERS CAN BE VERY UNEVEN IN SIZE AND MANY JUDGES FIND THEM DIFFICULT TO JUDGE BECAUSE OF THE VARIANCE IN TYPE. NOW THOUGH THE GBGV IN THE UK IS GOING FORWARD WITH MANY VERY GOOD TYPE HOUNDS IN THE RING. LUCKILY BECAUSE OF THEIR APPEAL THE PUBLIC ARE MORE INTERESTED AND THEY ARE BECOMING A POPULAR PET.

WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE PET PASSPORT NEW LINES ARE EASIER TO ACQUIRE AND AS IN THE CASE OF "BARBU" THEY CAN BE SHOWN IN FRANCE WHERE HE WON THE MALE CHAMPION CLASS AT THE ELEVAGE IN 2001; BOB FOR THE SECOND YEAR AT THE WINNERS SHOW 2001 AND ALSO AT THE WORLD SHOW 2002 IN AMSTERDAM THE CACIB . HE COMPLETED THE YEAR BY WINNING BEST IN SHOW AT THE BGV CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW FOR THE THIRD TIME.

IN DECEMBER 2001 I IMPORTED "NIREAU DU BARBILLOT DES MALADIERES" FROM HOLLAND. JOLANDA HAD PURCHASED HIM IN FRANCE AND HE HAD PRODUCED SOME EXCELLENT TYPE LITTERS IN THE NETHERLANDS. IN 2002 SEVEN LITTERS HAD BEEN BORN IN THE UK BY "NIREAU" BY 2004 THIS NUMBER HAD DOUBLED AND HE WAS TOP SIRE IN THE BREED

FINALLY IN 2006 WE SHALL BE AWARDED CC STATUS FOR THE BREED IN THE UK BY THE KENNEL CLUB. THE BREED IS GOING FORWARD AND NOT JUST NUMERICALLY BUT ALSO THE UNIFORMITY IN TYPE IS IMPROVING. LET US HOPE THIS LOVELY BREED CAN CONTINUE TO DELIGHT THOSE WHO HAVE THE GOOD FORTUNE TO BE OWNED BY ONE.

Here are some lovely photos of Ch Debucher Matisse,
who at 8 years old, has retired to the seaside

Hi Vivien,

We hope you are well and that you and the dogs are coping with the endless rain and mud we are having.
Matt has helped us to get through January - he sits very patiently looking at the world outside the patio door until the squirrels get too close and then he just has to go and chase them, and with the beaches to walk on we have still been able to have good walks. He now shares his time evenly between us and doesn't feel the need to be with us all the time. And he is developing good 'table manners', ie. he waits until he is told he can start eating rather than diving in!

The beach pictures attached are of a beach a few miles down the coast. There is more sand there and Matt can walk off the lead for the whole walk (about an hour).

The picture of him at the table is Matt hoping for a treat ..... he still loves his gravy bones.

Here's looking forward to the spring and mud free walks

Best wishes,

John and Maggie

Grands 2019

2019 was an exciting year for our GBGV puppies that were exported overseas. In March we exported 5 pups. They were sent out to beat ”Brexit” on the 31st March, which of course, did not happen! The puppies born in December 2018 were by Lacroix Do Casal Dos Choupos bred by Mafalda Marques in Portugal. He is by Ch Debucher Tambour who went to Portugal as a puppy.

Debucher Notre Choix Junior Group                                              Notre Choix Baltic Junior

Debucher Notre Choix (Nalle) went to the famous Minskuhoff Kennel of Maria Aaltovirta and he has already gained Junior and Nordic Junior Champion status, as well as CACs and Group placings.
His litter sister Debucher Noblesse Noblesse (Saga) went to Heidi Orling who already has Ch Debucher Orlando and she has also been successful in the show ring and won a CC in Finland.

Debucher Norbert (Thor) went to Nick and Ingrid Lamaker in the Netherlands and he has already been on a Wild Boar Hunt and shown at their Club Show. A litter sister, Debucher Nancy (Ruby) went to a pet home in Geneva to a family who had already had a GBGV from me in the past.

Debucher Noblesse Win

From a second litter, with the same sire but out of Debucher Gairside Fait Accompli, Debucher Obsession was flown to Renata Kratinova in the Czech Republic and has been successfully shown there. Whilst her litter brother Debucher Oregan flew to Australia at 10 months to join the Mabrooka Kennel in Dubbo belonging to Darrell and Deb Matthews. They had lost Ch/Aus Ch Wilmit Braconnier de Debucher on 10th January after a successful career with them, and they were keen to have a new boy from us. Hopefully he will prove a useful addition to their GBGV family.

Debucher Nestor First Show                                                     Debucher Obsession               Debucher Oregan going to Australia

The first Championship show of the year was Manchester Dog Show and our judge Gavin Robertson awarded Debucher Bizet the Reserve CC. Bizet, who is owned and handled by Ellie Harris, with my grand daughter Amelia Hepner Theodorou, won his first CC as a Junior in 2016 and later this year in July at Southern Counties and Leeds Jeff Horswell and Espen Engh both awarded him Reserve CCs  bringing the total up to 10!

ON 29TH APRIL DEBUCHER SENSASS HAD HER LITTER WHICH WAS A REPEAT OF THE “L” LITTER OF SEPTEMBER 2017. SIRE WAS LACROIX. FROM THIS WE SENT DEBUCHER POLKA TO HELSINKI WHERE SHE LIVES VERY HAPPILY WITH PAIVI AKERBLOM.

DEBUCHER LETITIA WAS LIGHTLY SHOWN IN 2019 DUE TO MY JUDGING COMMITMENTS. I WAS SO PLEASED THAT SHE WAS AWARDED 3 RESERVE CCS. THE FIRST IN JULY AT HOUNDSHOW BY ANITA ROBERTS AND THEN BY JOHN THIRLWELL AT DARLINGTON IN SEPTEMBER AND FINALLY THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME HER THIRD AWARDED BY THE EX PRESIDENT OF BOTH THE CLUB DU GRIFFON VENDEEN AND FRENCH KENNEL CLUB MONSIEUR RENAUD BUCHE WHO CAME OVER TO JUDGE OUR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW IN  NOVEMBER.

Grands 2017

Sadly in January we had the death of Debucher Victor Hugo
(Debucher Jaromir - Debucher Prima Donna) at 12 years of age.

Victor was a lovely hound, shown as a youngster but spent his last 10 years living with Ellie Harris

At Manchester Championship show  Murray Armstrong  was the judge and awarded BOB to  Ch Debucher Matisse and BOS to  Ch Wilmit Gigi with Grandoreille.

On then to Crufts where Dianna Spavin awarded BOB to Gwen Huikeshoven and Phil Reid's 's European Champion Frosty Snowman( Dutch Champion Milano van Tum Tums Vriendjes - Dutch Ch Aktiste v Tum Tums Vriendjes) who then  won the  Hound Group the first time for a Grand Basset. The  Bitch CC going to Huikeshoven and Reijerkerk's Miss Magic Van Tum-Tums Vriendjes (Multi Champion Hocus Pokus V Tum Tums Vriendjes -  Geneva van Tum Tums Vriendjes)  the Reserve dog CC was won my Ann and Colin Makey's  Gairside Good Lord and the Reserve Bitch CC  won by  Ch Debucher Violet Gray at her first show returning after maternity duties.

(PHOTO DEBUCHER VIOLET GRAY)
Best puppy was Fiona Buchanan and Mike Maclaren's Oxygene V Tum Tum Vriendjes
so a very good day for the V. Tum-Tums Vriendjes  kennel.

In March  (arriving just before Crufts) I imported Grand Awards Ulrika  Bostrum  a Debucher from Sweden,  her mother is Int. Ch Debucher Vendee and her sire Hillguards Doctor Watson brought us in some new lines from Sweden.  She went to Bath Championship show and as well as Best Puppy won Best bitch!

Patsy Hollings judged  at the BGV Club Open show there were no dog  puppies entered ,Debucher Bizet won Limit Dog and reserve BD to his half brother Debucher  Sartre who was Best dog.  Minor Puppy Bitch was Barbara Milton’s imported  Ethos in the Cloud with Wilmit (Imp USA) who won Best Puppy in Breed. Best of Breed and BIS was Ch Debucher Violet Gray. The sad news on 27th March, was of the death of Debucher Zsa Zsa,

Born 26th March in 2006 (Nireau du Barbillot des Maladieres _ Debucher Idyllique) she went to Gwen Huikeshoven's for her first litter to Barbapapa v Tum-Tums Vriendjes and  returned to the UK followed by  her son Can Can V Tum-Tums Vriendjes sire of several GBGV in the ring today and his sister Frou Frou mother of Ch Debucher Matisse. She had two more litters, the 3rd to Ch Wilmit Braconnier de Debucher produced Debucher Heroine at Janimist , mother of Denny's Debucher Zara at Janimist and Yvonne Mould's Zamba before retiring, she was put to sleep just a day after her 11th birthday.

Sadly on the same day we  heard that Ch Debucher Savoir Faire "George" had died peacefully sitting in his favourite chair  at the age of 13.  As a youngster George was owned by Pam  Marston Pollock  who campaigned him to his Championship title... he then went into retirement.  Sadly he only sired one litter however his grand daughter  Debucher Sublime with Wilmit has produced champions for the Wilmit kennel.

On to Birmingham National where Jeff Horswell was the judge. BOB and winning his 16th CC was  Ch/Ir Ch Tarmachan Cartier. Reserve dog CC was Ellie Harris and Amelia Theodorou's Debucher Bizet and the bitch CC which was the coveted third for the Claela kennel was Pam and Claire McGregor's Claela Beauvoir Sur Mer which certainly made their long journey worth it. Reserve CC and ultimately Best puppy was  Oxygene van Tum-Tums Vriendjes (Imp). Best Veteran was  Ch Silvamoon Sapphire Sh CM.

A message from South Africa where Lientjes Marais imported the first two GBGV into the country 2 years ago, which stated that Yoda (Debucher Alexandre of Midestino (Imp UK)) and Leia (Debucher Badra of Midestino (Imp UK)) both acquired enough CC Points to be declared South African Champions. The first two KUSA registered GBGV.

At SKC I judged the breed. My BOB was Ch/Ir Ch Tarmachan Cartier winning his 17th CC on the day. Reserve Dog CC was  Gairside Good Lord. They were thrilled as  his litter sister Gairside Good Gracious won the bitch CC (her first) and Ann reminded me that this was the third generation I had awarded CCs to. (her grandmother Ch Gairside I’m still Waiting and dam Gairside  Sans Souci). Reserve CC was awarded to Pamela and Claire McGregor's Claela Avrille at Eardley and best puppy was bitch puppy Tarmachan Ice Diamond ( Ch Frosty Snowman - Ch/Ir Ch Tarmachan Florentine)

Nationale d’Elevage took place in the Vendee at Fontenay le Comte marking 110 years of the Club du Griffon Vendeen. Monsieur Simon Amand was the GBGV judge. The puppy, junior and Veteran classes were judged later. Working class with 12 entries had Leonard de la Terre Courage owned and bred by Patrick Puig who won the CACS and Jumper des Taillis de l'Auxence owned and bred by Monsieur Jacques Grellet was second with the Res CACS. Champion Males winner was Dutch Ch Mimas de la Maison des Femmes bred by Suzanne Kok Gerrebrands and owned by Robert Jan Sluiter. Best puppy was Marius de la Terre Courage and Veteran Male was Monsieur Grellet's Cow  ( love the name!!)  who subsequently was best Veteran in Breed.

Working  females and the CACS was won by Monsieur Galy's Haidiy des Genevriers du Creusot and  Debucher Yezebel  (Diva) who belongs to Karin Van Viersen and who had gained 130 points on her Brevet du Chasse test  won the Reserve CACS coming second in Working female Class! BOB was however Gwen's Champion Daisy Duck V Tum-Tums Vriendjes  winner of Champion Class. Veteran Bitch was Chez Nous du Levant de la Vieille Marne  bred by  Frederic Mayeur who was judging PBGV bitches this year. She is owned by Nick Lamaker from Holland. BOBs in each of the 4 breeds only commenced after all the team and progeny classes, and BIS  was finally awarded to the Grand Griffon Vendeen of Monsieur Lamoureux.

At Windsor Championship show, we had  Serena Parker judging who awarded his 16th CC and BOB to s Ch Debucher Matisse and Bitch CC  ( her 8th) to Fiona Buchanan and Mike Maclaren's Ch/Ir Ch Tarmachan Florentine with her son Tarmachan Nice over Ice winning the reserve CC. Best puppy and then first in the Puppy Hound Group under judge Jenny Dove.  Reserve bitch CC was won by  Gairside Good Gracious,

On 1st July, sadly  Sophie "Debucher Sauve Qui Peut"  (Debucher Xtrovert - Debucher Faites Vos Jeux) was put to sleep she was 13½ grand daughter to Ch Debucher le Barbu and Dehra Esperance de Debucher, she produced Debucher Gitane whose progeny is now the backbone of the Debucher kennel. Debucher Greffier the foundation of Nancy Mclean's Ethos GBGV kennel in the USA and Ch Debucher Tambour who went to the Do Casal dos Choupos kennel in Portugal. She was awarded the first bitch CC in the UK at Crufts in 2006. Sadly just 3 weeks later we lost Can-Can V Tum-Tums Vriendjes Debucher at the age of just 8. Put to sleep to avoid further suffering…...Sire of many nice pups including Ch Debucher Why Not at Eardley. Debucher Sartre. Champions Wilmit Gabriella and Gigi at Grandoreille and the Makey’s Gairside Good Lord and Gairside Good Gracious.

At Houndshow  our judge Wendell Moore was awarding CCs for the first time.BOB was Ch/Ir Ch Tarmachan Cartier with Ch/Ir Ch Tarmachan Florentine winning the Bitch CC. Reserve dog CC was Ch Debucher Matisse and Reserve Bitch CC Ch Debucher X Factor. Best puppy was Tarmachan Ice Diamond and Best Veteran Wilmit Eclipse. Cartier was then awarded Group 3 for BIS under judge Shirley Rawlings.

At Driffield Fiona Buchanan had  her first CC appointment. Her Dog CC ( his second) was  Gairside Good Lord JW who then went on to win BOB and the bitch CC  Ch Silvamoon Sweet Sapphire Sh CM who gained her 9th CC on the day at the age of 9!  Reserve Dog was  Ch Debucher Matisse and the reserve bitch CC was a first  for Yvonne Moult's Debucher Tosca ( Can Can V Tum-Tums Vriendjes Debucher (Imp NL) - Debucher Yodel) Best Puppy was Ann Salmon's Emma Jane at Scarscot

Ch/IrCh Wilmit Domino was put to sleep (25/5/2007-23/10/2017) He was a true gentleman and a fine example of the breed. He was sire to Ch Debucher Rigole and Ch Wilmit Fanfare as well as his grand daughter Ethos in the Cloud with Wilmit all the way from the USA.

17/2/2005 - 16/11/2017  we had to say goodbye to a great character at 12½. Debucher Willow (Nireau Barbillot des Maladieres - Debucher Vaillante). She was lightly  shown as a youngster and won Best Puppy at Crufts in 2006 the same year we were awarded CCs for the first time. She sadly had a Pyo when in whelp at 3 so never carried a litter.

DEBUCHER LE BARBU DOB 20.2.97

In 1997 the Grands Bassets Griffons Vendeens finally came off the imported register and we were able to compete against other dogs in the ring for Groups and Best in Show etc.

On 12th January, Dehra Esperance de Debucher became the first GBGV to get a Best in Show at Buckinghamshire Canine Society under Peter Jolley.

In February on the 20th Efficace du Roc de Deymier whelped her final litter in which was a beautiful dog puppy Debucher Le Barbu who became the top winning GBGV in the UK of all time.

1997 was a great year for Debucher!!!

Grands 1998

At the first Championship show of the year Hound Association of Scotland, Debucher le Barbu won BOB, beating Dehra Esperance de Debucher (top GBGV 1997) for the first time. The judge was Pam Marston Pollock. Barbu continued his winning ways throughout the year and was top GBGV in 1998.

We finally had our chance to exhibit the Grands Bassets at Crufts in AVNSC Hound The judge was Ann Macdonald. Jessica Holm's Dehra Esprit d'Amour won Best AVNSC handled by Mike Gadsby. She is litter sister to Esperance. Best male was Melanter Fetlar an Esperance son.

At the BGV Club open show under judge Audrey Herring Dehra Esperance de Debucher and Dehra Esprit d'Amour were best dog and bitch with Debucher le Barbu and Debucher Jour d'Hiver reserves. Eesperance took BOB.

In July Debucher Jaromir produced his first litter to Grande Bretagne du Greffier du Roi. I kept a bitch puppy Debucher Quant -a-Soi who was to produce 4 good litters. Jaromir a Flambeur son was in the first litter out of Jolanda du Hamel de la Renaudie a bitch I had purchased from Renaud Buche the president of the Club du Griffon Vendeen and subsequently of the French Kennel Club. She came through quarantine as a baby and had 4 litters before retiring to the Devon countryside. Grand Bretagne was the second GBGV to come to the UK from Jolanda Huisman via the Balai Directive. Her dam was Favorite du Roc de Deymier the litter sister of Flambeur who Jolanda had purchased after the untimely death of her breeder Yves Auduoy. Her sire was Elton de l'Echo de la Sucharde who brought new lines into the UK.

At the Championship Show in October Yvonne Dean awarded Best of Breed to Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi the sire of Debucher le Barbu..

In November Flambeur produced his final litter to a sister of Barbu (Debucher Limoges) This was Debucher Renegade a single puppy. He was top puppysubsequently in 1999.

Grands 1999

In 1999 the competition hotted up in the Show ring and many new youngsters emerged into Grands the ring. Christine Leverett and her daughter Peternel had repeated a mating to Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi out of their bitch Jaclin Abracadabra. I had purchased a dog and bitch from this litter. Tasway Wolftone and Tasway Vive le Craic. They emerged at the BGV Club Open Show where we were lucky enough to have Jolanda Huisman over to judge both Grands and Petits. BOB was Jessica Holm's Bassbarr Sporty Spice for Holmchappell a Flambeur grand daughter who had been born in quarantine and subsequently purchased by Jessica. Best dog and Best puppy in show was "Wolftone".

In 1999 Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi, Debucher le Barbu and Debucher Jaromir all won BOBs and Best dog awards. The top GBGV for that year was however the bitch "Sporty Spice".. The year in the show ring ended with Mogens Hansen from Denmark judging our Club show where he awarded Debucher le Barbu Best in Show. This was to bode well for Barbu who subsequently held top spot for the following 5 years!

Debucher Renegade was top puppy for the year. A legacy to his superb sire "Flambeur"

Grands 2000

In February Maidenhead and District show invited Madame Florence Leonard-Nolle (famous owner of Briquets Griffons Vendeens and member of the Club de Griffon Vendeen of France committee) to judge all the hounds. She gave Debucher le Barbu best of breed and his niece at her first show Debucher Une Telle, best puppy.

She then awarded le Barbu hound group and he went on to win Best in Show under judge Valerie Foss.

At Crufts 2000 Jeff Bunney gave Le Barbu best of breed and the following week at the BGV Club Show Stella Blackmore, breed specialist, awarded him best of breed and with Linda Millar (the Petit judge) it was decided to award him Best in Show, following on from Best in Show at the BGV Club Championship show in October 1999.

At the club show Puppy dog was won by Debucher Taiaut owned by Gina Gingell. Post Graduate Dog by Tasway Wolftone chez Debucher. Open dog by Debucher le Barbu, puppy bitch by Debucher Une Telle who then won reserve best bitch. and best GBGV puppy. Post Graduate bitch was won by Tasway Vive le Craic chez Debucher and Limit Bitch by Debucher Ivoire.

Since then on 2nd April 2000 Barbu has won reserve best in Show at South Eastern Hound Club.

Debucher le Barbu has been unbeaten at Championship Shows in his breed this year. He gained group 3 at Birmingham National in the Hound Group the highest placing, so far for a Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen.

Grand Basset puppies can be seen born May 2000.

We look forward to bringing out new puppies into the ring this Autumn Debucher Vaillante, Debucher Wispa and Stepends Fortevoit.

Le Barbu finished the year as top Grand Basset in the uk and top Rare breeds overall. he then went to Holland on the new Pets Passport Scheme.

He gained his first CAC at Maastricht within a week and then went to the Winners Show in Amsterdam where under Monsiuer Medart he gained Best of Breed and as this show awards 2 CACs he was well on his way to his Champion Status. He also won the CACIB.

John Hiddes then gave him the Scent Hound Group and in the very capable hands of Jolanda Huisman he went on to win BEST IN SHOW

This now means he can enter Group 8 at Crufts in 2002 automatically!!!

The Grands Bassets in 2001 really made their mark in the ring at our Championship Shows. Dutch Ch Debucher Le Barbu won the Hound Group ( a first for the breed!) at Blackpool. Windsor and East of England  and placed second at Welsh Kennel Club. Birmingham City and Richmond.  He placed Group 3 at Three Counties,  South Wales and Paignton and Group 4 at SKC.  He ended the year top GBGV ( for the third time)  Top Rare Breed (second year running) and most exciting of all number SEVEN ALL BREEDS IN THE UK.

Perhaps his greatest achievement was winner of the Champion Class a the Elevage du Club du Griffon Vendeen in France beating five French GBGV Champions!!

Debucher Xtrovert (Dehra Esperance de Debucher - Jolanda du Hamel de la Renaudie) made his debut at LKA in 2000 and then sadly , due to the Foot and Mouth Crisis, he missed out on most of his puppy career. At Birmingham National he won Reserve best Dog and Best puppy . He also gained  Reserve Best Dog  at  Windsor and Bournemouth.

Stepends Forteviot  chez Debucher was Top GBGV bitch in 2001. Bred in Scotland (Melanter Fetlar - Bassbarr Aria) I chose her as a 9 week old puppy as  pick of litter and she proved she could challenge the best winning Best Bitch at Birmingham National , Bath,  Paignton, WKC and Darlington.  She also went Reserve Best in Show at Woking open show.

Despite not being shown in 2001 Debucher Jaromir was the sire of the top puppies in the breed in 2001 with the emergence of Jan Pain's Ravensbeech litter out of  Debucher Karess at Ravensbeech, her own Ravensbeech Bayeux (Best puppy at the BGV Champ Show) and his litter sister Ravensbeech Beaujolais won consistently and  Stella Blackmore now owns their litter brother Ravensbeech Beau Geste.Debucher Jaromir's daughter Holmchappel Going Dutch was Best Bitch at Crufts.

BARBU WINNER IN AMSTERDAM

From the new combinations bred in late 2002. new puppies emerged in the ring in 2003. Debucher Idyllique (Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi - Debucher Vaillante) made her debut at the BGV Club show where Jessica Holm awarded her Reserve Best Bitch as well as Best Puppy. She was top GBGV puppy for the year 2003.

At Crufts in 2003 Debucher le Barbu was Best of Breed (for the third time) under judge John Hiddes and was shortlisted in the group. The best bitch was Jessica Holm's Holmchappell April Fool who was also best puppy.

On 20th June 2003 tragically the great Dutch Champion Flambeur du Roc de Deymier was put to sleep. He was 12 ½ . Fortunately his legacy lives on in his progeny and
particularly his son Debucher Jaromir has produced the type of his father and has been top sire for 3 years.

The world show in Dortmund in May 2003 was judged by Monsieur Renaud Buche who awarded the CACIB Debucher le Barbu. The best of breed went to Jolanda Huisman's young dog Tartuffe du Clos de la Valeraine (Olaf- Orange du Domaine de la Chartreuse). bred by Guy Lesellier.

A week later everyone met in France where the best of breed at the Nationale d'Elevage went to Surcouf de l'Oustal Viel bred by Monsieur Galibert. The bitch CAC went to Jolanda Huisman's Prima Donna du Greffier du Roi. (Nireau du Barbillot des Maladieres -Il y Etait Une Fois du Greffier du Roi). Debucher le Barbu once more won the Champion male class.Jolanda Huisman won the best team of Grands Bassets which included "Barbu" making up the six hounds.

At the 2003 BGV Club Campionship Show best puppy was Debucher Malgre Tout (Debucher Xtrovert - Libertine) who was also reserve best dog.

Top bitch in 2003 was Debucher Tete-a-Tete avec Nubeewa co-owned by myself and Barbara Milton she was bred to "Nireau" and produced a litter in January 2004.

In 2003 Barbu was top GBGV in the UK for the fifth time and he went to Europe for the latter part of the year to win BIS at Hanover in November where he was handled by his co owner Jolanda . He completed a successful year with Reserve Best in Show at the "Winners" in Amsterdam. Where he had previously won BIS in 2000.

For the dedicated breeders in the uk the best news was that the kennel club General Committee had finally awarded us CC status in 2006. The breed has come a long way since the early days. The hounds are improving in their
uniformity of type. Let us hope that this lovely breed can continue to delight those who have the good fortune to be owned by them!

As 2004 draws to its close the great news is that Debucher le Barbu now a German, World Europa and Dutch Champion is once more top GBGV in the UK for the sixth year!!!

His Grand daughter and Grandson Debucher Sauve Qui Peut (Sophie) and Debucher Savoir Faire (George) (Owned by Pam Marston Pollock) have had a brilliant start to their show careers winning Best Puppy at a number of Championship Shows.

Barbu's sister Debucher Lyrique was the dam of Debucher Wispa who was mated to Debucher Xtrovert ( the sire of Sophie and George) in 2003 and had a lovely litter which produced Debucher Picobello and Debucher Pret- a- Porter who are joint Top Puppies this year. Their litter sister Debucher Prima Donna lives here and hopefully will produce a litter soon.

Nireau at present is top Stud Dog for 2004. His latest litter of 8 puppies to Debucher Quant-A-Soi was born 30th September.

We still miss "Effie" but her spirit lives on in her great grandchildren.

In 2005 Dutch/Ger/World/Eur Ch. Debucher le Barbu went into semi retirement, though he is champing at the bit to come out in 2006 with all guns blazing to try and get those 3 CCs in the UK to complete his amazing career as a UK Champion..

He won BOB at Crufts (for the fourth time!) and then went to Birmingham National to enter in the Pedigree Veteran Stakes where judge Ellis Hulme made him winner for the day but was beaten into reserve best Veteran by a Standard Poodle!

He won 2 more BOBs, one at Southern Counties where Group Judge Hans Lehtinen gave him Hound Group 2 and then at the BGV Club Champ Show in October where he also won Best Veteran in Show. At the only other show he attended he won Best Dog under John Hiddes at Birmingham City in September.

In the meantime the rest of the gang flew the flag for Debucher with Debucher Victor Hugo making his show debut in June and consequently going to 10 shows and winning 8 Best Puppy in Breed awards! He also won Best Dog under Jeff Bunney at South Wales Championship Show.

Debucher Idyllique (Bien Fait du Greffier du Roi - Debucher Vaillante) was also in contention with Best Bitch awards at Windsor and Welsh Kennel Club. She also won Post Graduate Bitch at Crufts and Limit Bitch at the BGV Club Show. Her half sister Debucher Willow (Nireau du Barbillot des Maladieres- Debucher Vaillante) started her show career at the end of the season and happily qualified for Crufts with a 2nd and a 3rd in strong competition with older bitches in the ring.

We look forward to hopefully winning those precious Challenge Certificates in 2006 and hope our new baby Debucher Yorrick (Debucher Picobello - Debucher Faites Vos Jeux) will commence a successful puppy career .

2009 ended with the hardest winter we had experienced here at Clipperdown Cottage for several years.
The snow came on 16th December and never really cleared until end of February 2010.

Ch Wilmit Braconnier de Debucher won another CC his 5th at Scottish Kennel Club under judge Rod Price and his 6th under specialist judge Jessica Holm at Houndshow, where he was handled by Darrell Matthews from Australia who, having purchased to GBGV from me in 2008 was desparate to exhibit a Grand Basset at an English Championship Show.

The bitch CC on the day and BOB was Jolanda Huisman’s Interessante du Greffier du Roi which made her up into a UK Champion. Her sire was Multi Champion Dehra Extra Ordinaire who was the litter brother to my own Dehra Esperance de Debucher (Bear) both bred here in 1994.

"Poacher" won a 7th CC at Welsh Kennel Club under Gavin Robertson and and 8th under Jill Peak which was a single CC for the breed at Driffield Championship where he took Group 4 in the hound group under Jean Blandford which cemented his top GBGV position for the year.

At the PBGVCA in in April 2010 Debucher Greffier belonging to Nancy McLean was brought to the show in order for members to see some Grands Bassets. He was used in a talk given by Kitty Steidel on the GBGV. Nancy has been campaigning "Greffier" at Rare Breeds Show as they are not recognised in the USA and had great success.

Below follows the report that Nancy wrote to me and reported on the show and in May Greffier's litter sister Debucher Gitane produced 7 lovely puppies from which 1 is being shown in the UK (Debucher Unison) owned by Tim Jones and Steve Jepson of. Eardley Beagles and another (Debucher Ulrika) will hopefully be shown in Norway.

Hi Vivien,

Our boy, Greffier had a wonderful time at the Nationals! I brought himout on Thursday and saw a bit of the regional show and then came back on Saturday. Kitty Steidel presented a judging workshop first thing Sat. am and asked me to bring Greffier in to represent the GBGV. He loved the attention ofcourse and the judges found it very helpful to see the differences andsimilarities of the two breeds. There was one other GBGV at the show, anolder German import named Mortz. Maybe you know him? Anyway, I think hisowner was a bit offended that she had not been asked to participate in the workshop.

I had several people come up and comment on what a nice quality boyGreffier is. I don't think they were just being polite. They genuinelywere impressed by his structure and temperment. Some people said they hadheard the Grands were rather "harsh" tempered with other dogs, so it wasreally important for them to see how even tempered Greffier is and how NOTHING gets him upset (other than girls in heat, that aren't for him!). Maybe he will find a wife soon, now that people have seen how awesome he is.

The show, dogs and people all re-solidified my commitment to being part of exposing American dog fanciers to this breed. I was suprised how many PBGV people had still not seen a Grand. I was also a bit suprised to find that some of the Grand people seemed rather discouraged about gaining full AKC status. I, for one, am feeling positive about the breed here in the US. Now that we can show in AKC performance events, IABCA conformation, ARBA conformation and UKC shows (which I didn't realize) the GBGV will promote itself as a wonderful companion. We just need to be out in the public eye with them every chance we get. Recognition will come more quickly now that we have so many venues for exposure, not to mention the power of the internet. Anyway, perhaps I am rambling. I know you are busy with puppies. Please send pictures whenever you have a moment.

I just want to thank you again for sharing your wonderful boy Greffier with me. Keep me posted about any love interests you might hear of that would compliment him!

Take care, Nancy

Debucher Gaulloise at home aged 13

Lois remains as delightful as ever. She is never a moments bother, although her hearing is failing slightly which can result in us having to wait for her in the mornings until she realises that she is on her own and she comes back to find us! (I know this is genuine as she doesn't hear the food bowls clanging either at meal times!). She is also a back seat traveller these days as she finds it easier for getting in and out of the car. Lois is the absolute perfect ambassador for homing an older dog - she is thirteen now and has been with us since she was seven and a half. She has never had an accident in the home; free-runs on daily basis with the GWPs; has fitted in perfectly with the home routines and is a firm favourite with everyone.

We absolutely adore her.

Best wishes, Claire, Lois and the Rudishaw GWPs

In Finland at Yppari all breeds show Heidi Orling was delighted to win BOB with Finnish/Estonian Ch Debucher Orlando who lives with her but also belongs to Iva.
He was then in the final 6 out of the two groups 5 ( Spitz breeds) and 6 (Scent Hounds) competing together.
Orlando is a Junior Croatian Slovakian/Czech and Lithuanian Champion.
Now he has reached the age of 2 he only needs one more CC from a Baltic or Nordic country to become a full adult Champion in those countries also.
( In Norway or Sweden he would require his hunting Test Certificate in order to become a full Champion)

I had some wonderful news from Hilde and Geir Westrum in Norway to tell me that Nor/Sw and now Fin Ch Debucher Vuvuzela
( Debucher Hors D’oeuvre – Debucher Creme Brulee) has become the first GBGV ever to gain the title of Nordic Tracking Champion today.
“Vuzela” had her second litter just 15 weeks go, let’s hope her progeny have the same talents !

GBGV’s Using Their Noses

I have two GBGV’s, Debucher Baguette, aka Emma, and Ethos Irish Cream, aka Bailie. I first heard about nose sports in Bailie’s puppy class and signed both hounds up for NACSW nose work classes in January 2014. Nose work is a fairly new, rapidly growing sport in the USA, fashioned after the K9 Detection Dog Training Programs. Nose work has turned out to be such a fun and wonderful sport for me to do with the girls. It starts out with the dogs searching for treats and moves onto searching for odors, birch, anise, and clove. One thing I love is dogs of any age can participate. In order to compete in the sport, the dog needs to pass an Odor Recognition Test (ORT) for each odor. Both my hounds have their ORT’s for all three odors.

Although both hounds participate in nose work, Emma is my nose work dog. She absolutely loves the sport and is very good at it. NACSW Nose Work competition consists of three levels (birch, birch/anise, birch/anise/clove), and four element searches (interior, exterior, vehicles, containers).  Emma earned her Level 1 Vehicle Element Title, Level 1 Container Element Title, Nose Work 1 Title, and Nosework 2 Title this year. Bailie wasn’t able to get a trial spot this year, so we hope she can get some titles in 2016. In a trial, the dogs will conduct the searches, and find the hide(s), which are blind for the handler. The handler needs to be able to read their dog and call “alert when the hide is found. To title, the handler must call a correct alert for all the hides. The sport really helps a person bond with their dog through working together as a team and learning to read your dog. You may direct your dog as far as a search pattern, but to find the odor, you are fully dependent on your dog and their nose.

Both my hounds also participate in AKC tracking which is fashioned after Search and Rescue Training. Bailie is my tracking dog as she truly loves tracking. Bailie earned her TD (Tracking Dog) Title last month. A TD title is earned by running a 440-500 yard long track with three to five turns, a start article, and an end article. Tests are typically held in tall thick prairie grass fields. The handler has no idea where the track is, and is completely dependent on the dog to find the track, follow the turns, and stop at the end article. The test track is laid by a person the dog does not know, meaning the dog needs to be able to track the scent of someone other than their handler. During the test, the handler must remain a minimum of 20 feet behind the dog, and never give the dog any form of guiding. Emma should be ready to be certified this winter and will hopefully enter a TD test in the spring.

Having scent hounds involved in sports where they really use their noses is simply wonderful! Seeing what they are capable of is amazing and amazes me every time we practice! The joy they have in working is fabulous!  If you are interested in more information, our blog, MyGBGVLife.com has a section on nose work and tracking. Our posts are full of information, photos, and videos of Emma and Bailie working in nose work and tracking from their start to now.
